A bed and breakfast in Druridge Bay is hoping to build on a successful first year in business following Northumberland’s success in the UK tourism awards.

Council and business leaders across the region are celebrating after Northumberland was awarded the silver award in the Best UK Holiday County category at the British Travel Awards and No.6 Druridge Bay is eyeing further success for next year.

Having opened its doors in January with support from the Business Northumberland initiative, Liz and Phil Nichol have had a fully booked B&B from May until the end of September. Overlooking the beautiful aesthetics of the Northumberland coastline from the bay, the B&B has already welcomed guests from as far as New Zealand to Florida and across Europe.

Business Northumberland offers established and start-up businesses in the county free support in reaching their full growth potential. It is a free service that provides business advice and support to anyone thinking about starting a business in Northumberland and also offers business coaching to existing businesses with growth ambitions. Business Northumberland is jointly funded by Arch, The Northumberland Development Company, Northumberland County Council and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Phil Nichol, said: “We are hoping for another successful year following an amazing first year so far. We’ve now opened a second room as we had to turn away customers throughout the year due to being fully booked on many occasions.

“The award is great news for the region and is well deserved, you’ve just got to take a look at what it has to offer to see that. We’re hoping it’ll bring more tourists to the area and of course to Druridge Bay.”

Northumberland fought off tough competition from holiday hotspots such as Yorkshire, Cumbria and Devon to make it into second place at the awards ceremony in London. Since opening the bed and breakfast it has had almost 90 bookings and boasts a star rating of 9.8/10 on booking.com.

Druridge bay is a 7mile long resort stretching from Amble to Cresswell and is renowned for its Country Park & visitors centre, Ladyburn Lake and golden beaches which are a ten minute walk from No.6.  The success of No.6 is another in a reel of start-up businesses succeeding in Northumberland, the tourism award will undoubtedly help more entrepreneurs into business to capitalise on the booming tourism sector.
